I've had the privilege of photographing (Dr ) Gill Hicks AM MBE Hon.FRSA a few times over the past 5 years. The first time she was when she was being interviewed by Trish Hansen for the 2021 Adelaide Autumn Salon run by Parlour Inc: gender, equity, architecture at the Adelaide Brickworks Building Products Design Studio back in 2021. I was then commissioned by Jarvis Cars, Richard and Joanna Collins to photograph two private screenings of her show "Still Alive and Kicking" in 2023. Since then, I have worked with Gill to craft portraits of her for the plethora of amazing work that she does. I also photographed her last Adelaide Fringe performance at the Woodville Town Hall this year.
I'm familiar with her story having talked to her about it, and witnessing her perform it numerous times, but each time it's told in a different way. A different memory emerges, or it's conveyed with a different tone or emotion than the previous time. Each show is unique in it's own way. One thing that never changes though is that the entire audience is always captivated by her story-telling, her singing, her humour and her resilience.
Today marks the 20th anniversary since the 7/7 London Bombings.
Gill is bringing her performance Still Alive (and Kicking) to London for one show only at Wiltons in 2 days time. I think there are still tickets available.
I wish you all the best for your performance, Gill.
This article is made up of images I've captured of Gill during many of our interactions since 2021.
